Several times each year I get to bump into Ryan, usually during my New Year getaway with my friends in New York. When we see each other, we always end up conversing incessantly. We talk about various things like how we grew up, where we grew up, our childhood experiences, and of course football. He is a talker and he talks to almost everybody. Nevertheless, something is different with him this year. It could be because we seem to find each other no matter where we are or it could be because he spent more time conversing with me than usual. Either way, it was something I am grateful.

For the next three months following New Year, Ryan acted like a hunter. He chased me, followed up on me, and asked my friends about me. He emails me on a regular basis. However, because we live in two different states we have to hold back and take things slowly but surely. I live in North Carolina and he lived in Kentucky. The succeeding years of our relationship consist of a lot of driving from my place to his place. At first, we did not mind the travelling because we were still young back then. Yet, as years went on we grew tired of the same routine began to crave for something bigger, something more serious. We decided that we want to leave our hometown and start over in a different state.

On our fourth year together, Ryan received an offer as a coach at a local football team in California. With or without me he already made the decision of accepting the offer and relocating. One month later, I decided that it is time to make the move and it turns out that Ryan is also planning to talk to me about this. Therefore, I relocated and for the first time in four or more years, we resided in the same state. It was a relief that the long distance relationship is now over. Living together is a very big adjustment and each day we keep on discovering new about each other.

After one year of moving to California, we then made the decision of buying a house together. It was an exhilarating experience then followed by the decision to buy a furry companion. We bought a puppy after we got the house.

When I was finally settled in the new place, a friend of mine asked to take a weekend off. She said she needs my help on the paintings she is currently working on at their lake house. I invited Ryan since it would be nice to swim in the lake with him, but he said he is going out with his friends for some quality time.

Weekend came and Ryan was already out with his friends. He was planning to spend the rest of the day with them. I was about to go out the front door when my friend called me and told me that I need not go to her place anymore instead she told me that I need to start packing and get by myself to the airport. I started asking question but she refused to answer. Turns out, Ryan sternly warned her not to say a thing.

I went back to the bedroom and found the note on my drawer giving me specific instructions on the type of clothes to pack. There were also instructions on what I should do once I get to NY. In the note is a phone number that I should call once I land in NY. Then, the ticket for New York fell when I opened my suitcase in order to start packing.

While I was doing all these, millions of questions are running through my mind. I was wondering what Ryan is up to this time. Did I do something wrong? Or Is he breaking up with me? Butterflies are in my stomach.

I was feeling nauseated and when I got to the airport my flight was delayed for two hours. The moment I stepped into New York I immediately called the number written on the note. Then a rental came to pick me up and dropped me at Central Park. I asked the driver a series of questions but it turns out he signed a gag order too. Therefore, with my suitcase in tow I walked into Central Park only to find Ryan leaning against a tree with a mischievous smile on his face.

He stepped closer and kissed me, the next thing I knew he was already down his knees proposing to me. Everything happened so fast and I barely had time to absorb everything. I can hardly remember if I shouted yes or if I merely squeaked.

The moment I gave out my yes, he took my hand and whispered to my ear that we need to get dressed because we have dinner reservations and somebody is waiting for us. We went back to the hotel and changed. At the restaurant I found out that the somebody he was talking about were our family and friends.

I never actually met Liza. I just saw her around the neighbourhood. She is so amazing and she has an aura that never fails to turn heads. Every time I see her, I would often tell myself that she is out of my league or that she is probably in a relationship with somebody else. It wosuld be months before I get the chance to talk to her and introduce myself for the first time and discover that she is perfectly single.

It was during January of 2003 when I saw her standing at an auto repair shop waiting for her car to get fixed. Unfortunately, the problem was the windshield; some naughty kid threw a rock at it. At this moment I realized that this is my chance to make myself known to her. Therefore, I drew a few breaths and walked up to her. I remember the first thing I said was about how nice her car was. Upon hearing that compliment, she gave me a sweet smile. Indeed, the car was not just nice it was precious to her. That simple compliment led to another and then we found ourselves chatting the time away. It was time for lunch and so I invited her. Luckily, she agreed. From that point on, I realized that I could not spend the day not thinking about her. I cannot seem to finish a day without appreciating her intelligence, her wit, and everything about her.

It was during the NBA finals in 2004 when she started talking about getting into serious relationship with me. We were bowling together with my son when she revealed this to me. For the past few months I have been contemplating about my relationship with her. I then realized that, she is the one who fills up the empty spaces in my life and in my personality without losing her individuality at the same time. Therefore, I realized that spending a life together is the best relationship we could ever have. Turns out, she is also the same thing and so we started discussing and planning our future together.

When it came to the proposal, I made a decision to make it as unique as possible because my Liza is one unique person, a person whom you will remember for the rest of your life. I never made the proposal a secret to her because I took her to shop for her ring. However, what she does not know is how and when I will propose.

I decided to pop the question at her workplace, which is the hospital. I enlisted the help of her fellow nurses and her boss as well. Luckily, they were all willing to help. The plan is to mimic a seminar for all the nurses at her unit and I will be the resource speaker. One of the nurses, Nora, who was adept at creating flash presentations volunteered to make one for me. Therefore, I sent her all the photos that we have together along with stories about our adventures and memories we made together. I made them promise not to reveal anything to her.

Finally, the big day, it was on the 17^th of December 2004. All her co-workers are gathered in the conference room waiting for my arrival as the resource speaker. Her boss, made the introductions and I quietly stepped out into the podium. I saw her and she was smiling from ear to ear with a surprised look pasted on her face. I started with the introductions when I blurted out that someone important is not present. Therefore, I went backstage and when I emerged I was with her mother. I made her sit in the front row and I continued with my presentation. I told the whole crowd about how I feel for Liza, how my world will never be the same without her, and how she seems to breathe life in me. All the people in the room are gushing and some women are in tears.

After saying everything, I went down the podium and stood in front of her. Without saying another word, I knelt on one knee and asked her if she is willing to spend the rest of her promising life with me. I admit I was nervous especially when she took a full minute before she managed to whisper “yes”. I was elated and surprised at the same time.

It did not take long before we realize that we are each other’s partner. We complete each other in a very special way. Then he moved in. After half a year of being together, he came home from work with a parcel in his hand. He did not give it to me; instead, he hid it in the closet. I was so intrigued by it but decided not to peek at it. Without telling me what was inside the parcel, he went away for a business trip. When he got back, he took out the parcel and instructed me to open it. Inside was a beautiful white gold necklace. I was hoping that it was an engagement ring and I must admit that I was a little bit disappointed when it was something else.

Two weeks after that, Nick came home holding another package and hid it in the closet. He did not say anything but told me not to lay a hand on it. Despite my increasing curiosity, I did not dare open it. I almost forget about it until the 14^th of February.

Nick, did not talk to me for most of the day and I was feeling depressed not only because it was Valentine’s Day but also because he did not talk about any plans for that day. I was grumbling with some paperwork when he barged into my office together his son and my daughter along with my officemates. At the back of my head, I thought, “well this is an odd way of asking me out for a date.”

He then stepped forward and said, “I know you are mad at me because I did not make any plans for Valentine’s Day. But I hope you understand I am planning for something better.” He then took out a ring box but did not open it and said, “If you accept this, this will be the symbol of our forever.” He knelt and popped the question that I have been dying to hear “Are you willing to spend that forever with me?” Tears were streaming down my face and all I could do was nod.

When we got home, he showed me the small package he hid. It was a wedding band for the both of us. I asked him why he hid it. He said that he just did it in order to tease me.

Our wedding is set on the 6^th of June and I will forever to remember the way he proposed to me.

Therefore, I already knew what was coming. I was even expecting he would propose to me in my hometown when he took me for a walk at a nature trail located nearby. I would be lying if I say I was not disappointed because I was.

Now, let us fast forward to present time. It was on the 23^rd of March and I was getting ready to go on duty for night shift. I was working for an outsourcing company located in New York. My boyfriend of five years was sitting on the porch reading some crime novel. I told him I am off to work and I also asked him to walk me to the garage since I have my hands full and I cannot open the car door. I was rushing because I know I going to be late. However, instead of moving at a faster pace he merely stood up, walked inside the house and came back with something. I was starting to get infuriated at his indifference when he looked at in the eye and said, “if you are going to be late tonight, that is because you have a reason to be late.” I was dumbfounded and speechless. He opened the black velvet box and there lay my dream engagement ring. A white gold ring with a princess cut diamond. He then took my hand, slipped the ring, and said, “I know you already know this is coming, is it still necessary that I ask you to be my wife?” He had that silly look, I could not help but smile, and then I said, “You just asked me and my answer is yes.”

We were so ecstatic and forgot about me running late. Instead, we got our mobile phones and started calling our family and friends and sharing them the good news. After all the excitement, I realized that I still have to go to work.

When I arrived at the office, my supervisor was furious. I showed her the ring and she excused me. When I got home, I asked Tyler why he chose to propose at a very unconventional time. He merely said, “You are so good at figuring out my surprises that I have to beat you at your own game and propose to you at the moment when you are hardly expecting it.” He said it with so much pride that my heart melted with so much love for him.

Before we actually met, we led different lives. Jim was married and has a 5-year-old daughter and I was married too. Unfortunately, our marriages did not work out and so we ended up being single and available all over again. To help us deal with the loneliness we signed up and posted our profile on an adult dating site (the site I choose not to divulge). It is on this website that we met each other for the first time.

I was having second thoughts about meeting him personally. However, after spending several weeks chatting online and talking on the phone I began to loosen up. Therefore, I decided to meet up for lunch. Even before we sat down we were already talking and the chemistry is there. From that day onwards, we have been dating exclusively.

After a year of being committed to each other and exclusively dating, I decided that it is time for us to take one-step further. Therefore, I sneaked to the mailbox and dropped a letter. In the letter are detailed instructions on what he will do in order to locate my proposal. Unfortunately, he did not check the mailbox that day.

In the end, I trashed my artistic scheme of proposing to him and instead opted for the more direct and personal approach. I sat across the breakfast nook and said “Jim, it has been awhile since we got together. I think it is high time that we tie the knot. Will you marry me?”

He was dumbfounded and looked confused. I was beginning to worry when he took my hand. He kissed me and whispered to me “it will be an honor and a blessing to spend the rest of my life with you.”

The wedding date is on the 16^th of September, 2011.

As you can see, the moment we sat down we started talking. It turns out that we have the chemistry. We seem to know what the other is thinking and seem to like the same things. We talked about everything and the spark is evident. When we talk, it feels like nothing else matters. We even forgot about the time. We were in the middle of our conversation when his mobile phone rang. It was an emergency case and he has to get back to the hospital. We finished our meal and as we stood up to bid each other good-bye, I found myself hugging him as if we had known each other for years. Beyond that, I ended up planting a kiss on his lips. We were both shocked and before he left he asked to a date on the upcoming weekend. Without any hesitation, I agreed.

On my way home, I found myself smiling at the mere thought of him. I felt light hearted and happy. Then I realized that it has been years since I last felt this way. When I finally got home, my sister took one look at me and said that I just found the person whom I will spend the rest of my life. I was shocked and brushed off her comment.

However, after our date that weekend we realized that we are right for each other. We then started dating exclusively for almost half a year. Then an unfortunate event took place. I got sick. I was diagnosed with a ruptured appendix and had to undergo emergency surgery. He recommended a surgeon and he stayed beside me all throughout the procedure. He was also there when I was recovering from the surgery. Although I told him I am not moving in with him until we are together for a year, I ended up moving on our 10^th month.

In a family gathering wherein my mother, my stepfather, and my siblings are present, Vincent made a surprising announcement. He stood up in the middle of the room and made a short speech about us being right for each other. Then he turned to me and asked me if I am willing to be his wife forever. I was dumbfounded and I could not bring myself to answer. Therefore, when the gathering ended the question was left unanswered.

I did not answer him immediately because I want to be certain about my decision. I need to be sure because I believe that marriage is over. Then I reflected on the things that we have been through. I thought about how we tested our relationship and how we handled each other’s differences. At that point, I realized that living the rest of my life without him is never going to be the same again.

When he got off from work, I sat with him on the porch. I told him that I would marry him and spend the rest of our lives together.

On the 17^th of December 2010 we will be exchanging vows.

During the holidays, he told me that he was planning to take me somewhere for the summer. He said it would only be him and me. He said that he is planning to celebrate our anniversary somewhere new and somewhere fresh. I gave him a quizzical look but I still agreed with him. What I did expect is the weekend plans he made for the both of us.

He very well knew that as a history major, I am fond of historical places. It does not matter whether it is a thousand year old or a hundred year old mansion, statue, or park because I will surely look at it with interest. What I did not expect is the length he took to reserve a room for us at the Hotel Bel-Air Los Angeles. It is not your ordinary hotel because Hotel Bel-Air is one of the best hotels in California.

I was ecstatic at the thought of a romantic weekend getaway considering that we have been in a long distance relationship for quite some time now with Zach living in Florida and me living in Texas. The moment I was free from any school obligations he and I took the first flight to L.A. It was an early flight and we were exhausted the moment we landed in Los Angeles. We went straight to Hotel Bel-Air. The moment we set foot at the entrance, I was immediately blown away. It is not just historic. It is the most romantic hotel I have ever been.

I was exhausted but I was so intrigued by the place that we ended up checking every single nook and cranny. We even went for a little tour around Bel-Air California. By the time the tour was over it was already evening, perfect timing for dinner. I was expecting that we would have dinner at the restaurant near the lobby, but I was wrong. Instead, he took me out to the courtyard then to the lush green garden. We sat by the bench underneath the vines. He told me he has something to give me, something to mark our anniversary. I did not know what to think because this is not the first time he gave me something. However, when he took out that red velvet box my heart was pounding inside my chest.

He said nothing, but I can see it in his eyes that he was about to ask me something really serious. He then dropped to his knees, opened the red velvet box and to my astonishment there lay my engagement ring with an emerald cut diamond. My eyes were welling with tears. When he asked me to be his wife, I can hardly hear him. He asked me to take off the ring he gave me during our first anniversary and he replaced it with my engagement ring. I was so happy I forgot to answer his question. Then as if on cue, servers came out from all directions and set up a table for two, right in the heart of the garden. It was then followed by a bottle of champagne and then our dinner.

After our engagement dinner, we started calling our family and friends and spreading the good news. They were all happy for us and are relieved that we finally decided to tie the knot.

Before we left, we drop by a local church and asked the priest to bestow his blessing on us. We already laid our wedding plans but Zach said that we should get married once I finish college. For now, I am contented at envisioning my future wedding.
